To install Sound Blaster 1.x, 2, Pro, 16, AWE 32 & SB32 (legacy) cards on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

For Sound Blaster 1.X, 2, Pro users, you will have to use the MS Windows NT 4.0 native sound driver "Creative Labs Sound Blaster 1.X, Pro, 16".

For users with Sound Blaster 16, AWE 32 or SB32 (legacy) cards, you may use either the native driver or download the Creative AWE driver file AWENTPNP.EXE for Windows NT 3.51 from our CompuServe Forum, BBS or website to install the Sound Blaster 16.

For AWE 32 or SB32 (legacy) cards users, you may use either the native driver to install the Sound Blaster 16 and download the Creative AWE driver file AWENTPNP.EXE for Windows NT 3.51 from our CompuServe forum, BBS or website to install the AWE synthesizer; or use the AWENTPNP.EXE file to install both the AWE 32 driver and Sound Blaster 16.

Copy the AWENTPNP.EXE into a temporary directory or onto a blank floppy and extract out the files.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Double-click "Multimedia" icon.
  3. Click on the "Devices" tab.
  4. Next, Click on "Add" button.
  5. Choose "Unlisted or Updated Drivers" if you are using the files from AWENTPNP.EXE. Otherwise, select "Creative Labs Sound Blaster 1.X,Pro,16" and go to the following path "Drvlib/audio/sbpnp/i386" from your WinNT4.0 installation disk and click OK. Proceed to step 7.
  6. Select the path where you have extracted the files from AWENTPNP.EXE, click OK and select "Creative Tech. SB16". Click OK.
  7. If you are having an AWE 32 or SB32 card proceed to step 8. If not, goto step 11.
  8. When prompted to reboot, click NO.
  9. Go back to Control Panel and go through step 2 to 5 again.
  10. Select the "Creative SB AWE32 MIDI Synth Labs" and press "OK".
  11. Reboot when prompted.

To install Sound Blaster 16, AWE32 & SB32 Plug n Play driver on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

WARNING: The PnP driver you are about to install will only work with a single Plug and Play sound card.

  1. In \drvlib\pnpisa\<processor_architecture> right click on pnpisa.inf and select Install. (if you don't see this file, click View -> Options -> View -> and select "Show all Files" and unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".)
  2. Reboot when prompted.
  3. Log onto your computer with Administrator privileges.
  4. You will see "New Hardware Found" and then be prompted to install drivers for several functions on your card:
  5. Choose "Driver from disk provided by hardware Manufacturer"
  6. Enter the path name for the SBPnP driver: drvlib\audio\sbpnp\x86
  7. Select OK on the Select Device screen
  8. Next select Manual Configuration. If there are any conflicting devices at the bottom of the screen, resolve them first by selecting basic configuration 0001, then highlight the offending setting in the Resource Settings window. Click on Change Setting, and select a setting that does not conflict with another device. Select OK when finished. Repeat for any other settings that show a conflict.
  9. If prompted for Creative Labs 3D Stereo Enhancement Technology, select "Windows NT default driver".
  10. As there is no release of a PnP AWE driver in this release of MS Windows NT 4.0, you will have to install the AWE sythnesizer driver from AWENTPNP.EXE (See To install Sound Blaster 1.x, 2, Pro, 16, AWE 32 & SB32 (legacy) cards on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0)
  11. If prompted for IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller, select "Do not install a driver (Windows NT will not prompt you again)".
  12. If prompted for Microsoft Joystick Port Enabler, select "Windows NT default driver".
  13. Reboot your machine when prompted.
  14. Your Sound Blaster card should be working properly at this point. If you need to change the resources that your card is using, open the Multimedia Control Panel applet, select the "Devices" tab, select "Properties" for the Sound Blaster driver, and click on the "Settings" button. This will bring up the same resource picking dialog that was invoked when installing the device.

Installing Creative CD-ROM in MS Windows NT 4.0

For Creative CR563 drive, NT 4.0 has a built-in native driver for it or you may also use the old SBCDNT.SYS driver from BBS. The filename is SB_NT.ZIP/EXE.

To install the SBCDNT.SYS,

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Double-click "SCSI Adapter"
  3. Go to "Drivers" setion
  4. click on "Add" button
  5. Click "Have Disk"
  6. Type the path that contains SBCDNT.SYS e.g. a:\

Note: If you install NT 4.0 together with CR563, then it should be detected during installation using native driver; MKECR5xx.SYS. However, if you connect CR563 after NT installation, then you may have to follow the steps above as you will not be able to install NT native driver for CR563 from the NT4.0 disc if CR563 is not being detected at the first place.

For Funai E2550UA and CD200 drive, you can only use the SBCDNT.SYS from Creative as NT4.0 does not provide support driver for this drive.

For IDE CD-ROM drive, NT4.0 will detect Secondary and Primary port address only.
