Creative Developers Unveiled - The Character Design of FX Fighter

What? Character Design

The process GTE used to develop the characters for FX Fighter was a complicated and important step. With so many fighting games competing for the consumer's attention it was our intent to develop some of the coolest characters possible. And the one industry which specializes in the development of characters is the comic book industry.

The Evolution of Sheba

The first step in developing the characters was to decide on the games premise. Argonaut suggested that the gamers were getting tired of martial artists from around the globe so we focused on super hero style characters from different planets. Argonaut then created some character descriptions and developed some rough drawings for GTE.

Next we contacted a local comic book artist named Tommy Yune who helped design the characters. Credited with the creation of the cult comic 'Buster the Amazing Bear', Tommy Yune helped give each character their own unique look and added depth to each character. For each character he created a comic style drawing, in color, along with side and back views. These drawing were then sent to Viewpoint Datalabs and converted into SGI models. These models are used in the game for segue animations and intro sequences.

To round out the creation of the characters, we went to Wildstorm productions. Wildstorm, located in nearby La Jolla, is owned and managed by Jim Lee, and is part of the Image Comics universe. Jim Lee actually helped us create artwork for the character used on the front of the packaging, and Wildstorm is currently developing a limited edition promotional comic which will be included with the product.
