Voodoo / 3DFX Users please see notes at the bottom of this file. D E S C R I P T I O N =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Blow up your desktop in 3D! This screen-saver takes a snapshot of your desktop and projects it into a 3D world, where it is dissected into an arbitrary number of explosions. This screen saver can also run a wave through your 3D screen, giving it an awesome wave effect. Almost every option is user-changeable, including animation support which allows the screen to rotate on all three axis and zoom in and out. Also added is fully configurable resolution switching for slower machines. (see the performance section below) I N S T A L L A T I O N =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- First, to make sure you have the latest opengl drivers for your video card get glSetup at www.glsetup.com. Unzip the files into your Windows/ directory or if you have WindowsNT unzip it into your WinNT/ directory. Get winzip at www.winzip.com You can also install it by unzipping it into a temporary directory, then right click on the .scr file and select install. To activate it: left click on your desktop background and select properties, then select the screen savers tab, this screen saver is called 3D Desktop Destroyer and should be in the Screen Saver selection box near the top. If you don't have opengl.dll installed then it won't run, opengl.dll should already be installed on windows95b, 98, and NT, if you don't have it then get it here: http://www.opengl.org/Downloads/Downloads.html Also, get the latest version of this screen saver at my website... http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jaybebe/screen_saver.html You can also purchase it on my web-site, the version you have now will come up with a please register message after several uses, and it has some limited features until it is registered, registration is only $10. Just a note: you will probably have very slow performance unless you have a good graphics card, if it goes too slow then make sure you have your latest graphics cards drivers, if it still goes slow, then I am sorry, but this screen saver was specifically designed for high-end systems. P E R F O R M A N C E A N D R E S O L U T I O N S =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- To make sure you have the latest opengl drivers for your video card get glSetup at www.glsetup.com. If you are not sure what video card or opengl driver you are currently using try using the OpenGL Switcher program, it allows you to switch OpenGL drivers back and forth quite easily. http://home.earthlink.net/~heavensrage/ogls.html I can obtain reasonable image quality and very fast performance at resolution of 512x384x16 and in software mode! You can also try 320x240x16 and 320x200x16, all of these work fine on my system. This screen saver has been tested on: 3dfx Voodoo3, Voodoo2, Banshee, S3 VirgeDX, Riva TNT If you have a card other then this and it does or doesn't work, please email me and tell me so I can update this list. K N O W N B U G S =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- No known bugs at this time. U P D A T E L I S T =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Latest Version 1.6 as of 5/24/1999 Bug Fixes since v1.5 Wave settings are now consistant at all resolutions! Animation speed is now time dependant rather than system speed dependant. Added another viewing mode called Random Preset (this mode picks a Explode or Wave preset randomly on startup) Preview works very fast now at high texture width/height settings. Made resolution switching box update current resolution selection. Made OpenGL bitmap smaller to reduce file size. Preview window now displays accurately. Tweaked some of the wave defaults. Added new nag message and about box bitmap. Bug Fixes since v1.4 Tweaked some of the settings. Redid configuration dialog box to make it a little cleaner and smaller. Tested and works with Voodoo3, very nice. (GET THE LATEST DRIVERS) Added resolution switching (software mode now!) Redid this README file Added OpenGL Bitmap for default display (for a post on opengl.org?) Totally redid registration. Bug Fixes since v1.3 Made a small optimitizion and added more thread priority settings. Compiled optimized version specifically for Pentium processors. Bug Fixes since v1.2 Fixed the registration function. Bug Fixes since v1.1 Crashed after closing in wave mode sometimes, fixed. Implemented all user save/recall functions.  (registered version only) Bug Fixes since v1.0 Now displays correctly in screen-saver preview window. Smooth shading check box updates correctly. Thread priority setting is working correctly. N O T E 3 D F X U S E R S =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- YOU MUST USE 16 BIT COLOR DEPTH IN ORDER FOR 3DFX TO WORK! I have tested it and it works with the Voodoo3 2000 and above, you must install the Quake3 compatable drivers. I did not rename or change any OpenGL dll's, after installing the new Q3 drivers it worked fine in any resolution at 16bit color depth. You can do this by just going into the screen saver confuration and selecting change resolution button, then select any resolution at 16 bit color depth and it should work awesome. You must have your resolution set at 640x480x16 or 800x600x16 for hardware acceleration to work on Banshee/Voodoo2 and older cards. Due to 3dfx's poorly written OpenGL driver, this screen saver does not work on all 3dfx cards. You can try using Mesa, which is a Glide emulated OpenGL driver which might work for you, goto www.mesa3d.org, or to directly download them, goto http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/7220/mesa3dll.zip Don' get me wrong, I have a Voodoo3 and love 3dfx, its just that their opengl drivers SUCK! But, they should get them done sooner or later ;) C O P Y R I G H T A N D D I S C L A I M E R: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This screensaver was created for the 3DFILES.COM screensaver contest.
